Piezo electric igniters6/12/2023 ![]() The crystal's voltage can generate a nice spark that lights the gas in the grill. When a strong force is applied on it by means of a spring loaded hammer it produces an electric spark. Piezo ignition uses the principle of piezoelectricity, which, in short, is the electric charge that accumulates in some materials in response to mechanical deformation. A voltage this high is identical to the voltage that drives a spark plug in a gasoline engine. A piezoelectric crystal is the heart of the gas igniter. Piezo ignition is a type of ignition that is used in portable camping stoves, gas grills and some lighters. For example, in a BBQ lighter, the popping noise you hear is a little spring-loaded hammer hitting a crystal and generating thousands of volts across the faces of the crystal. This creates the necessary amount of voltage to generate a spark. This is the typical process used in such lighters. When you apply pressure to them, you get a charge separation within the crystal and a voltage across the crystal that is sometimes extremely high. How does a piezo electric ignitor work When the button on a Piezo electric ignitor is pressed, a spring loaded hammer strikes quartz in order to create a spark.
